Everglades & Gators

One day when we were in Miami Beach, Alisha and I decided to visit "Alligator Alley". It is a road along the northern edge of the Everglades which is known for having alligators sit along the bank of a canal which runs alongside the road. This turned out to be one of our favorite things from the entire trip.

One of us would drive, while the other stayed glued to the window looking for sunbathing alligators. After some time, we switched so the other person could watch. At first we stopped at each alligator, but we started seeing so many that eventually we skipped the smaller or lone alligators. During the course of the day we probably saw about 75 alligators.

Several places offered airboat rides, so we found one that was well-reviewed (we rely heavily on Yelp and Tripadvisor). They took us out through the grass and showed us a mother with 4-5 baby alligators, and then had one alligator come right up next to the boat and open its mouth in front of me.

The video below has some of the more memorable alligators we saw along alligator alley, plus some alligators from the airboat ride.

As a bonus on our journey along the edge of the everglades, we got to see the smallest post office in the united states. It was roughly a 6x8 shed:
